It’s Not All about Spring Cleaning – Spruce up Your Home This Autumn!

When you think of carrying out a deep clean at home, you may be mistaken in thinking that the best opportunity to carry it out is during the spring time.  However, at Edwards of Tadley we believe autumn is also a great time for getting on top of the domestic chores and giving everything a thorough, deep clean prior to the winter.  Here are our top tips as to why you should be preparing yourself for an autumn clean:

  1. We spend more time indoors during the long winter months

Inevitably with the British weather, we spend a lot of our time tucked up indoors between the months of November and March.  In which case, we need to be able to enjoy our homes and not sit there frustrated at the sight of cobwebs hanging from the ceiling, or the smell of old food burning when you put the oven on.  Getting on top of the cleaning during the autumn means that you can continue with your regular clean during the winter months, therefore leaving you time to bake, wrap Christmas presents or entertain friends and family.

  1. It’s easier to clean the windows if it’s cloudy

This may sound a little odd, but you will actually produce better results if you clean your windows when it is cloudy outside rather than if there is blazing sunshine.  The glare from the sun can make it difficult to see any marks or smears up close, so you’ll get a better finish by giving the windows a good clean if it’s miserable outside.

  1. Have your bedding professionally washed

It may not be the most pleasant thing to think about, but inevitably your mattresses, duvets and pillows will have been subjected to a fair amount of sweat during hot, sticky nights in the summer.  Autumn is a great time to strip the beds, vacuum the mattresses and send the pillows and duvets off for a thorough, professional clean

  1. Be brave and open the windows

The fall in temperature may mean that you are keeping your windows firmly shut, but this isn’t great for the atmosphere in your home.  Having the bedroom windows open for a few minutes each morning and ventilating the bathroom after showering can help to reduce the amount of moisture in the air.  A build up of moisture can lead to mouldy grouting or window seals, and levels of bacteria can increase, so try to air your home as much as you can.

  1. Consider booking a service wash

Many homes simply do not have the space to dry multiple loads of laundry.  Not all garments can be tumble dried, and it can be hard work to dry bedding and towels around the home.  Consider using a professional wet cleaner to service wash and dry your essentials, as this will also reduce the amount of moisture in your home.
